A workshop on “Menstrual Health Awareness” was conducted by the Rotary Club of Delhi Garden City.  The session was attended by students (girls) of classes 4 and 5.  The objective of the session was to create awareness about menstrual health, break myths and taboos, and promote hygienic practices among young girls. The workshop aimed to empower students with correct knowledge and encourage confidence and openness while discussing menstruation.

Dr. Neelam Dhillon began the session with an interactive introduction, emphasizing the importance of understanding our bodies just as we nourish them daily. She explained that menstruation is a natural biological process that occurs in girls, usually between the ages of 9 and 16, and involves the monthly shedding of the uterine lining. She further elaborated on the menstrual cycle, its duration, and the four important phases—Menstrual, Follicular, Ovulation, and Luteal phase.

She highlighted that while mild discomfort during periods is common, severe pain, heavy bleeding, or irregular cycles should not be ignored and require medical consultation.

The session also focused on menstrual hygiene and the proper use of sanitary products such as sanitary pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. She stressed the importance of changing pads every 4–6 hours, maintaining personal hygiene, and proper disposal methods. She also explained how good hygiene practices help prevent infections and promote overall health.

Addressing common myths, Dr. Dhillon clarified that menstruation is not “dirty,” girls can continue attending school and participating in sports, and there is no restriction on daily activities during periods.

She also spoke about the importance of nutrition and self-care during menstruation, encouraging the intake of iron-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, and proper hydration while avoiding excessive caffeine and sugary foods. Suggestions like light exercise and the use of warm compresses were given to manage pain effectively.

An interactive Q&A session was conducted where students openly asked questions regarding mood swings, hygiene practices, and concerns related to periods. Dr. Dhillon addressed all queries patiently, creating a comfortable and supportive environment.

The key takeaways for the students were:

  • Understanding menstruation as a natural and healthy process
  • Importance of menstrual hygiene and safe practices
  • Breaking myths and removing social stigma
  • Importance of proper nutrition during periods
  • Recognizing when to seek medical help
  • Building confidence and open communication

In the end, Dr Neelam Dhillon addressed the gathering and encouraged students to speak openly about menstrual health, support one another, and maintain hygiene and confidence during their menstrual cycle.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks.
