Report on Career Counselling Session
St. George’s School, Alaknanda organized an insightful Career Counselling Session on 17 April 2026 for the students of Classes XI and XII. The session was attended by the Honourable Director Ma’am, respected Principal Ma’am, Supervisors, and students of Classes XI and XII. The session was conducted by the esteemed speaker, Dr. Savita Sharma, Associate Professor at the School of Education and Humanities, who brought valuable expertise and guidance to aspiring students at a crucial stage of their academic journey.
The session began with an introduction to the purpose of career counselling, emphasizing the importance of gaining clarity, making informed career choices, taking timely decisions and maintaining a balance between self-awareness and career aspirations. Students were encouraged to reflect deeply on their personal strengths and preferences before finalizing their career paths.
A significant focus was placed on four essential aspects of career planning: understanding one’s personality, identifying aptitude, recognizing interests and working on areas that require improvement. It was highlighted that the “right career” is not a one-size-fits-all concept and each student must choose a path aligned with their unique abilities and aspirations.
The discussion also included the role of psychometric testing in making well-informed decisions. Insights were shared on the National Education Policy, which promotes interdisciplinary learning rather than limiting students to a single academic domain. Various higher education pathways after Class XII, including entrance examinations like CUET, were explained. Information about prestigious government research institutes, private universities and initiatives such as the Super 30 programme was also shared.
Students were encouraged to actively explore opportunities such as internships and summer projects and to seek guidance from family members to gain real-world exposure to different professions.
A structured approach to career planning was outlined through clear steps: self-assessment, exploring options, selecting the right course and institution, preparing for entrance exams, building a strong portfolio, seeking guidance and setting both short-term and long-term goals.
The session concluded with a discussion on common mistakes to avoid, such as blindly following others, ignoring personal interests, inadequate research and choosing careers solely based on salary. It ended on an inspiring note, reinforcing that careful planning builds clarity and confidence and that starting early while remaining open to learning is key to long-term success.
